Nintendo Switch Date, Price, etc; Card Networks Spar Over Apple Card Account; Tesla-Worst Deliveries in 2 Years; Amazon-Last Minute Bid for TikTok US
Posted: April 2, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: business, Elon Musk, News, technology, Tesla Leave a commentNintendo has finally announced a date and price for the upcoming Switch 2. Theverge.com reports that the new handheld gaming system will be available on June 5th. It reportedly will be priced at $499.99. The Switch 2 will ship rocking a bigger 7.9 inch, 1080p screen capable of 120Hz, a 4K dock that upscales games for your TV, and Joy-Con 2 controllers that can work like a mouse. It also has 256GB of internal storage, up from 32GB on the original Switch. A new Mario Kart world game will launch exclusively on the 2 on June 5th…with open-world mode, in-game atmospheric effects that depend on ‘the time of day and weather conditions,’ and up to 24 drivers per race.
It has been no secret that Goldman Sachs has been itching to disengage from Apple’s Apple Card. The financial giant has reportedly lost money on the deal. Now, according to appleinsider.com, the card may not only be looking to land at a new banking home, but a new network. Apple Card has been affiliated with the Mastercard network since it rolled out. Mastercard would like to keep the deal, but apparently Visa has offered Apple $100 million to take over as payment network. American Express has also recently shown interest in grabbing the account. Apple can’t move from Mastercard until 2026 when their contract expires. If this quiet negotiation continues, Apple Card could see both a new banking home and a new payment network in 2026. I wonder if they will re-issue those titanium cards…they all have the Mastercard logo, so Visa or Amex won’t want that if they take the account!
Tesla recorded its worst deliveries in 2 years, mostly due to backlash over Elon Musk’s involvement in the US government via the so-called Doge. TechCrunch.com says the EV maker delivered 336,681 cars. Analysts had expected 408,000 for first quarter. The car maker delivered 495,570 vehicles in the 4th quarter of 2024, so this is quite a drop. European sales were off 49%, and sales in China were down significantly, with Chinese maker BYD passing up Tesla there. With drops like this, the stock is up almost 5% today. What gives? Well, word has leaked out of the White House that Musk’s days of meddling in the government are nearing their end. Apparently, in addition to his advisors and Cabinet Secretaries, even Trump is getting weary of Elon Musk’s antics.
Amazon has put in an offer to buy US TikTok, just days before the deadline for the app to be banned or sold to US investors. Bloomberg.com reports that the offer was made in a letter sent to Vice President J.D. Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Details…such as the amount offered…haven’t leaked, and some parties involved aren’t taking Amazon’s bid seriously. That would give credence to it being something of a low-ball offer. President Trump is due to meet with officials to discuss the app’s fate today, with the April 5th deadline looming. Trump has said that a deal with TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to sell the app will be finalized before that April 5th deadline.

Apple-New iPads; Google Drops New Android Features; Researchers-Less Educated Areas Adopting AI Faster; TSMC to Put $100 Billion into US Chip Production
Posted: March 4, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: AI, Apple, chatgpt, News, technology Leave a commentApple had teased some new product, and now we have some. Today, they dropped a freshened iPad Air powered by an M3 chip. Appleinsider.com reports that the form factor has stayed the same on the iPad Air, but the new chip gives it a 35% improved clock speed over the M1 chip version, and it also has a better Neural Engine. The new iPad is available in 11 and 13-inch versions, which are both the same size as the last models. Both continue to use Touch ID as opposed to Face ID…accessed via the top button. The 11 inch model starts at $599 and the 13 inch size is $799, and both are pre-order able now, and will be out March 12th. We still may see upgraded MacBook Airs yet this week.
Google has bowed new features for Android devices. According to Androidauthority.com, one is Scam Detection on the Google Messages App. A 2nd feature allows you to share your location with family or friends using Find My Device. They have also rolled out some new shopping features on Chrome for Android. Scam Detection for Messages uses AI to identify patterns commonly associated with scams to warn you in real time if it suspects a scam is happening. You can then either choose to ignore the warning or block and report the conversation. Scam Detection for calls remains in beta, but the beta has been expanded and it now covers all English-speaking Pixel 9 series owners in the US. As for the location sharing, you can let friends or family see where you are on a map now…that will be handy for, say, picking someone up at the airport. You have control over who can see your location and for how long. The shopping with Android for Chrome now lets you stay up to date on a product’s price history, track price drops, and compare prices.
Here’s an interesting AI wrinkle: researchers have found that people in less-educated areas are adopting AI writing tools more quickly than those in more highly educated areas. Arstechnica.com says Stanford researchers analyzed some 305 million texts, to get this surprising result. They analyzed texts to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for the study. By using a statistical detection system that tracked word usage patterns, the researchers found that roughly 18 percent of financial consumer complaints (including 30 percent of all complaints from Arkansas), 24 percent of corporate press releases, up to 15 percent of job postings, and 14 percent of UN press releases showed signs of AI assistance during that period of time. regions with lower educational attainment used AI writing tools more frequently (19.9 percent compared to 17.4 percent in higher-education areas). The researchers note that this contradicts typical technology adoption patterns where more educated populations adopt new tools fastest. The scientists note that the AI help seemed to ‘equalize’ things in written communications…bringing up the level of the communications from less-educated areas closer to parity with more highly educated places.
Although Taiwan Semiconductor has been furiously building chip-making plants in the US…notably Arizona…and has put billions into the project, it is apparently not enough for the Trump administration. Now, under threats of more tariffs from the US, TSMC will pump another $100 billion into its US chipmaking. How fast this happens or how much really happens is anyone’s guess. Both Apple and OpenAI have pledged to invest some $500 billion each into nebulous plans…apparently in an effort to avoid pissing off Donald Trump….who has threatened to not only put on stiff tariffs, but to trash the CHIPS Act, which has helped get chipmaking back to the US. Of course, since that is a Joe Biden deal, Mr Trump doesn’t like it.

Amazon Bows AI Alexa Plus; Zillow Alums Launch HouseWhisper for Agents; VW ID.4 #3 EV in US; Apple Fixing ‘Trump’ Racist Dictation Bug
Posted: February 26, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: AI, Apple, iPhone, News, technology Leave a commentAmazon is rolling out its generative AI version of Alexa. Theverge.com reports that if things go as planned, it should make it easier to control your smart home or get info quickly with less hassle. Some of the new abilities coming to Alexa Plus include doing things for you — you’ll be able to ask it to order groceries for you or send event invites to your friends. Amazon says it will also be able to memorize personal details like your diet and movie preferences. You will still activate Alexa Plus with the same wake word…Alexa. (For those who are watching this and I just activated your A-Lady…sorry about that!) The plus version has vision capabilities…it can take pictures and analyze images, as well as read a study guide and test you on answers. Amazon first teased this Plus version about a year and a half ago. Amazon is counting on getting their generative AI into their smart speakers before any of their competitors…there are plenty of those now, but not really on smart speakers yet. Apple is still wrangling with upgrading Siri with AI, and Google has yet to launch a Gemini powered assistant on their smart speakers.
A trio of alums from Zillow Group have kicked off a new startup that will focus on using AI to help ease the administrative overload that weighs some agents down. According to geekwire.com, the three are CEO Luis Poggi, who was VP of product and engineering at Zillow, Spencer Rascoff, former CEO and co-founder of Zillow, and Alex Kutner, a former Zillow engineering leader. The startup is called HouseWhisper, and it came out of stealth mode this week after hauling in $10 million in funding. According to the trio, HouseWhisper is a conversational AI that acts as the ultimate 24/7 personal assistant, helping agents stay organized with help on following up with clients, scheduling, CRM updates and more. Agents can call, text or send a voice memo to a number and interact with HouseWhisper’s AI as they would with any human assistant. The system has been in beta for 8 months, and is being tested out by some 4,000 agents around the country.
After a fumble last year that stopped delivery for a while due to faulty door handles, the Volkswagen ID.4 has roared back. Electrek.co notes that sales dropped 55% last year after the door handle disaster, but now, VW sold almost 5,000 ID.4 models last month, up 653% year over year for January…and vaulting it to the #3 selling EV in the US…only trailing the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. If VW stays on this pace, they should sell about 60,000 ID.4 EVs this year. By the way, the Honda Prologue was the #4 selling EV, and the Tesla CyberTruck was fifth. Overall, EVs amounted to 102,000 models sold in January, that is up 30% over January 2024.
A bug in Apple’s built-in dictation feature on iPhones showed up over the weekend. When a person spoke the word racist, the phone briefly interpreted it at ‘Trump.’ The name showed up in the text of the Messages app momentarily, before being corrected to the actual word that was spoken….racist. Macrumors.com reports that the name didn’t show up every time, but it did show up more often than other words. There are videos of the bug on TikTok and other platforms. Apple claims that the issue is due to a phonetic overlap between the two words, even saying that ‘racist’ and ‘Trump’ do have similar sounds. Riiiight. Former Apple Siri team member John Burkey said ‘This smells like a serious prank.’ I agree with that! At any rate, Apple is working on a fix.

OpenAI to Finalize 1st Custom Chip Design; Discord Bows Feature to Ignore Users Instead of Blocking; Lyft Shoots for 2026 for Mobileye-Powered Robotaxis; T-Mobile Satellite Texting for All in Beta…Free-For Now
Posted: February 10, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: business, Lyft, News, technology, Uber Leave a commentOpenAI is moving forward with its plan to cut its reliance on Nvidia for its chip supply by developing its first generation of in-house artificial-intelligence silicon. Reuters.com reports that the ChatGPT maker is finalizing the design for its first in-house chip in the next few months and plans to send it for fabrication at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. If the initial tape out goes smoothly, it would enable the ChatGPT maker to mass-produce its first in-house AI chip and potentially test an alternative to Nvidia’s chips later this year.
Discord is launching a new feature today. It’s called Ignore, and lets you hide any new messages, DMs, server, notifications, profiles, and activity from select users…without letting them know. According to Engadget.com, the DM from an Ignored person will show up in your inbox with an icon and a grayed-out name…that way if you DO choose to look at it, you can. The same will go for voice or group chat…you will see a warning alerting when the Ignored person is present. You’ll find Ignore in the drop down menu when you click an account’s avatar. A list of ignored and blocked accounts will show up in the Content and Social tab of User Settings. Ignoring is always better than blocking, as the other person generally doesn’t know and therefore won’t find some way to whine about being blocked to you.
Lyft is preparing to launch Mobileye-powered Robotaxies as soon as 2026. Techcrunch.com says they will first hit the roads in Dallas, with other markets to follow. Marubeni, a Japanese conglomerate with experience managing fleets, will own and finance the Mobileye-equipped vehicles that will show up on Lyft’s ride-hailing app. While Lyft has not yet disclosed its OEM partner for the launch, Mobileye’s advanced driver assistance technology is already integrated into vehicles from Audi, Volkswagen, Nissan, Ford, General Motors, and more.
The T-Mobile Starlink text feature is now available in beta for anybody with a compatible iPhone or Android to try out. It will give 4G or 5G coverage in areas not covered by regular cell service. Engadget.com reports that you can sign up even if you are on another carrier like Verizon or AT&T. The service is free until July, then people on T-Mobile’s high-end $180 Go5G Next plan will continue with it at no cost. Other T-Mobile customers can add the service for $15 a month, or $10 a month if you sign up before the end of February. If you are on another carrier, it will set you back $20 a month.

DeepSeek-Much Higher Failure Rate; Another Reason to Avoid DeepSeek; Sen Cruz Tries to Block Hot Spots for School Kids; iOS 18.3 Gets Starlink Support for T-Mobile
Posted: January 29, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Elon Musk, News, SpaceX, starlink, technology Leave a commentDeepSeek, the buzzy AI from China is now getting some not-so-good buzz. NewsGuard reports that the chatbot failed to provide accurate results about news and information topics 83% of the time. It scored 10th out of 11 compared to leading Western competitors. A NewsGuard audit found that DeepSeek debunked false claims only 17% of the time.
If that poor a return doesn’t bother you, here is more food for thought about DeepSeek. According to bgr.com…and frankly pretty widely reported elsewhere too…there is built-in censorship about anything sensitive to China. It’s not only built in…the app censors itself in real time. An example from reporters at The Guardian…DeepSeek AI worked well until they asked it about Tiananmen Square and Taiwan. The report also details cases of censorship that other DeepSeek users experienced, including the remarkable discovery that censorship doesn’t happen before DeepSeek starts formulating its chain-of-thought approach to handle a sensitive topic. Instead, DeepSeek tries to answer the question just like ChatGPT and other similar AI models would. A user from Mexico shared their experience with DeepSeek when asking whether free speech was a legitimate right in China. Now, today, the app has apparently been removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in Italy. Caveat Emptor.
Poor kids have enough of a time trying to keep up with learning in our connected world. The FCC voted last July to adapt a rule allowing a plan to distribute Wi-Fi hotspots to school kids, so that kids without reliable internet access could complete their homework. Now, arstechnica.com notes that Senator Ted Cruz at a hearing this week came out in favor of blocking the plan…claiming it will lead to unsupervised Internet usage, endanger kids, and possibly restrict kids’ exposure to conservative viewpoints. “The government shouldn’t be complicit in harming students or impeding parents’ ability to decide what their kids see by subsidizing unsupervised access to inappropriate content,” Cruz said. A press release from Cruz’ office said the FCC action “violates federal law, creates major risks for kids’ online safety, [and] harms parental rights.” He has introduced a resolution to nullify the FCC rule.
With Apple’s update to iOS, version 18.3, T-Mobile subscribers with a compatible iPhone and Starlink beta access are able to connect to Starlink satellites, reports Bloomberg. Apple quietly worked with SpaceX and T-Mobile to add support for Starlink to its iPhone lineup, and T-Mobile’s website confirms the new integration. Macrumors.com says that T-Moblie partnered with Starlink in 2022, and as of December 2024, opened up a beta program allowing subscribers to use Starlink satellites for texting in areas without cell towers. At the time, the T-Mobile Starlink beta program was limited to Samsung smartphones, and iPhones weren’t supported. The iPhone 14 and later already support satellite connectivity for text messages through Apple’s partnership with Globalstar, so iPhone users who are able to use Starlink can also opt to text with Apple’s built-in satellite service. Both Apple’s service and Starlink are only available when there is no nearby cellular network.

Google Maps to Rename Gulf of Mexico for Trump; Apple’s Big Release of Year; Waymo Starts Testing Robotaxis on LA Freeways; Google Store Adding ‘Verified’ Badge to VPN Apps
Posted: January 28, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Apple, News, Tech, technology, Waymo Leave a commentIn a stunning and embarrassing move, Google Maps will rename the Gulf of Mexico the ‘Gulf of America,’ in order to appease new president Donald Trump. 9to5google.com reports that the rest of the world besides the US will see both Gulf of Mexico and ‘Gulf of America.’ The name of Mount Denali in Alaska will also revert to Mount McKinley. Again, non-US users will see both names. Google says it has had a ‘longstanding practice to use official government sources.’ Expect to see these ridiculous changes soon. I can sense the laughter from the rest of the world right now.
Apple’s big release of the year may not be an iPhone Air or whatever they decide to call the skinny phone. Some Apple watchers think the big push will be the new home unit, being dubbed the ‘HomePad’ instead. According to bgr.com, the gadget will have a 7 inch screen and can be attached to a wall or a base with built in speakers. Such a device will be a major expansion into the home hub market for Apple. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman thinks it will be smaller and cheaper than an iPad and will run its own operating system. With an A18 chip in it, it will be significantly more powerful than the HomePods, which run on an Apple Watch chip.
Little by little, they keep expanding the territory. Now, Waymo’s robotaxis in Los Angeles are moving from city streets to the metro’s famous…or infamous…freeway system. Techcrunch.com says to expect to see the Alphabet-owned robot vehicles on I-10, 110, 405, and 90 for the time being. The cars will NOT have a safety driver behind the wheel! At first, they will only be transporting company employees, but plan to expand to the general public. Waymo has already been running on highways in the Bay Area on Peninsula and San Francisco freeways.
The Google Play store is adding ‘Verified’ badges of consumer facing VPN apps. 9to5google.com notes that the store already introduced a ‘Government’ badge last year, so this is something of an expansion of that. Google says the VPNs have an ‘independent security review’ in the Data safety section. A banner will also appear in search results. The new ‘Verified’ badge with shield and checkmark will show up next to the app rating and above the install button. Google has a list of requirements the VPN must meet to get verified.

ChatGPT Can Use Web for You; Android 16 Beta-iOS Type Live Notifications; Subaru Patched Security Flaw-Millions Could be Unlocked & Started Remotely; Apple Music-Artists Get Twice the Pay of Spotify
Posted: January 23, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Music, News, playlist, Spotify, streaming Leave a commentOpenAI is letting some users use a new ChatGPT feature that uses the AI to browse the web for the users…letting it book trips, buy groceries, bargain hunt, and do some other online chores. Wired.com reports that the new tool is dubbed ‘Operator,’ and it is one of the ubiquitous AI ‘agents’ that everyone in AI is pumping out. Operator comes on the heels of similar AI agents from Google and Anthropic. Salesforce has also lately been touting its agents to help salespeople, advertising on multiple billboards in San Francisco. Agents are considered a step beyond chatbots. Still, they are quite limited in what they can do…and basically only automate tasks that can normally be done with regular software. That considered, it makes me quite skeptical that AI will surpass humans by 2027, or even 2030. The hype seems to be far outstripping reality.
The first public beta of Android 16 is out, and with it come iOS style live notifications on the lock screen…very much like Live Activities on Apple’s iOS. According to techcrunch.com, another new feature is Advanced Professional Video…a codec for high quality video recording. They claim that the new APV will give users what they call a ‘perceptually’ lossless quality, closer to raw footage. Besides these changes, Android 16 has improvements for accessibility. Apple has been a leader in this area for years, it will be nice to see better accessibility features on Android phones.
Subaru has patched a security hole that had allowed millions of vehicles to be unlocked and started via an easily-hacked employee web portal. Engadget.com says after gaining access, crooks could remotely control a test vehicle and see a year’s worth of location data. The hack worked over Subaru’s Starlink suite of connectivity features….by the way, no relation to the SpaceX satellite internet service with exactly the same name. The vehicle tested with the hack was a 2023 Subaru Impreza. Security researchers found they could access ‘pretty much any Subaru in the United States, Canada, or Japan.’ This according to researcher Sam Curry. He could also query and retrieve personal info on any customer…emergency contacts, authorized users, home address, last 4 digits of their credit card, and vehicle PIN. Let’s hope that after this, it moves not only Subaru, but other vehicle makers to tighten the security on their back ends that allow employees to access car and owner info.
Spotify remains the cheapskate streaming service, paying artists less than the others…in fact paying half what Apple pays artists. Bgr.com notes that of the big streaming platforms, actually Amazon pays the best…followed by Apple Music and YouTube. The largest platform, Spotify, pays less than half what Apple Music does! According to Duetti, Amazon pays royalties at the rate of $8.80 per 1,000 streams (as of 2024), while Apple Music pays $6.20 per 1,000, YouTube forks over $4.80, and Spotify pays a scrooge-like $3.00 per 1,000 streams. It should be noted that Amazon Music is bundled with Prime memberships. One reason for Spotify’s lower payments is its Discovery Mode program, which is supposed to let indie artiest see more discoverable through the Spotify algorithm. the rub is, they have to accept a 30% reduction in payouts. Currently, over 26% of artists opt into that program. Although Spotify has called Duetti’s report ‘ridiculous and unfounded.’ The numbers do square with those I have seen from a copyright attorney and musician who practices in this area, so I’m saying they are accurate and that Spotify ought to step up.

Samsung Galaxy S25’s at Unpacked; Netflix Announces Price Hikes for All 3 Levels; Microsoft No Longer Open AI Exclusive Cloud Provider; Meta-First True AR Headsets by 2027
Posted: January 22, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: AI, News, Samsung, Tech, technology Leave a commentSamsung held their Unpacked event this morning. With all the leaks, we weren’t really surprised by a lot. We do have pricing though…Mashable.com reports that the Galaxy S25 will be $799, the S25 Plus is $999, and the S25 Ultra runs $1299. The base model has a 6.2 inch AMOLED screen, 12 gigs of ram, either 128 or 256 gigs of storage, and 3 rear cams…50 MP wide, 12 MP ultra-wide, and 10 MP telephoto. It has a 4,000 mAh battery. The extra 4 gigs of RAM will help it run Samsung’s AI. The S25 plus has a 6.7 inch screen, with the same RAM and processor, and same cameras…but a 4,900 mAh battery…and you can opt for 512 gigs of storage. For the S25 Ultra, you will get the biggest 6.9 inch display, 12 gigs of RAM, either 256, 512, or 1 TB or storage, and better cameras…200 MP wide, 50 MP ultra-wide, and 10MP/50MP telephoto. The Ultra also has a fat 5,000 mAh battery. Look for AI in the photos and videos, improved generative editing, and Audio Eraser like on the Pixel phones. As we had heard, no price hike..that’s maybe the best thing of all.
Netflix is hiking prices again…this time on all three of its plans. According to 9to5mac.com, the cheapie plan will go to $7.99 a month, while the top-line, gold-plated Premium plan with 4K streaming will whack your pocketbook for a princely $24.99 a month. The Standard plan without Ads is now going to be $17.99 a month. These price boosts will be for the US, Canada, Portugal, and Argentina.
Microsoft has inked a new deal with OpenAI giving Redmond the ‘right of first refusal’ on any new OpenAI cloud computing capacity. That means that if Microsoft can’t meet OpenAI’s needs, it is free to use a rival cloud provider. Techcrunch.com notes that OpenAI has made a larger new Azure commitment with Microsoft, so it’s not like they are completely splitting the sheets. OpenAI has griped about a lack of available compute space that delayed its products, and that has been a source of tension with the company and Microsoft. Last June, in fact, Microsoft let them sign a deal with Oracle for additional capacity. The new Microsoft OpenAI agreement runs through 2030.
A report out by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Meta is working on at least 3 new smart glasses models and is on the road to making their first true augmented reality glasses. Of course, Meta presently has the Ray-Ban smart glasses, and it is expected that there will be a newer model of those with a display. One new model may have a cam in the middle of the frames, with the target users being cyclists and other athletes. Those will be produced in partnership with Oakley. Another model called Hypernova internally will run simple software apps, let the user view notifications, and display photos taken. The price target is $1000. The true AR glasses may hit the market as soon as 2027.
