Microsoft- ‘Conversation as a Platform’; Apple Patents Stackable Magnetic Connector
Posted: March 30, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: AI, Apple, Artificial Intelligence, Build Conference, Chatbots, Conversation as a platform, Microsoft, Stackable magnetic connector Leave a commentA major theme of Microsoft’s Build conference is artificial intelligence…essentially chatbots being utilized as what they are calling conversation as a platform. Geekwire.com notes that a preview millennial chatbot Microsoft rolled out had to be pulled from the web when it was taught to be racist, so the tech is in a very early stage. Nonetheless, Microsoft is pushing forward with conversation as a platform. As we’ve reported, Microsoft, Google, and Apple are all working towards what may ultimately become the next big operating framework…augmented reality…and AI could play a very big part in that.
Meanwhile, at Apple, they have patented a stackable magnetic connector. Think of the mag safe connector MacBooks have used for power, only allowing for power, data, and peripherals to be daisy chained to the same base device simultaneously. Theverge.com notes that it could be used for more than just connecting a keyboard to a tablet. Theoretically, you could mount your iPhone or iPad like a drive on the desktop of your laptop…and conversely, access files and information on your laptop on a connected phone or tablet. Stay tuned…this could be a cool feature from Cupertino.
Future iPhone May Have Curved Glass Case & 5.8’” AMOLED Screen; Your Free Future Fridge
Posted: March 28, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: AMOLED screen, Apple, Face & Iris scanning, Free refrigerator, Internet of things, iPhone, Smart refrigerator, Wireless charging Leave a commentOver the weekend, appleinsider.com got hold of a note to investors from KGI Securities saying the 2017 iPhone may use curved glass front and back…similar to the iPhone 4S, but curved. It will also allegedly have an AMOLED screen…which, as we’ve noted, gives brighter colors and blacker blacks. The screen would be 5.8 inches, a little bigger, but smaller bezels would let Apple put it into the same sized phone. Wireless charging and face and iris scanning for security also may be incorporated.
A new fridge for free may be in your future. At least some people think so. At this year’s CES, Samsung introduced a refrigerator touted as truly “smart,” with connected cameras inside the fridge, an ability to run Pandora with built-in speakers and even grocery shopping through Amazon’s Alexa or a new, dedicated app called Groceries by MasterCard.Techcrunch.com reports that as an effect of the internet of things, and refrigerators like this one, your consumption can be tracked…and the fridge could automatically reorder the foods for you. Grocery sellers and manufacturers would subsidize this, as it locks in customers…like you are for the ink cartridges that go into cheap, subsidized printers. Are you ready for a fridge that makes recommendations, and has a subscription service for auto purchase of the foods? It looks like that’s coming!
Apple Pay Coming to Websites by Holidays; Sony Bringing PS Games to Mobile
Posted: March 24, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Apple, Apple Pay, ForwardWorks, Mobile Games, Paypal, Safari, Sony, Websites Leave a commentApple is getting ready to move Apple Pay beyond apps to mobile purchases over the web. Recode.net reports that the service will be available on iPhones and iPads with TouchID using the Safari browser by the holidays this year. Paypal has already had a system called One Touch that more than 250 top retailers use, but Apple Pay will be quicker and cleaner at checkout, with just the touch of a fingerprint, and you’re done.
In other big mobile news, Sony has formed ForwardWorks corporation to develop games using PlayStation titles and characters for mobile games. 9to5google.com notes that they won’t be porting full blown PlayStation games over to Android and iOS, but even ‘lite’ versions of many titles will please mobile users…and considering that there are billions of them, that should be a huge market.
Apple’s iPhone SE & Smaller iPad Pro, etc; Chromecast Becomes Googlecast
Posted: March 22, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Apple, Apple Watch, Chromecast, Google, Googlecast, iPad Pro, iPhone SE, Vizio Leave a commentIf there was a ‘one more thing’ at Apple’s event yesterday, it didn’t come from Apple. The FBI put on hold it’s demand for Cupertino to crack the San Bernardino terrorist iPhone, claiming it had outside help to do so. Since two former CIA directors have said the NSA could do it, that’s a pretty good guess. Meanwhile, back in Cupertino, Apple showed the 4 inch iPhone SE, the new 9.7 inch iPad Pro model, and new Apple Watch bands. the iPhone SE is pretty much an iPhone 6S squeezed into an iPhone 5S case. It starts at $399 for the nearly useless 16 gigs of memory, and is $499 for the more useable 64 gigs. Preorders start Thursday, and it’s available March 31st.
Apple has shoehorned its iPad Pro into a smaller 9.7 inch version. You get the same 4 speakers and Apple Pencil stylus support. It weighs less than a pound, and has it’s own version of the keyboard case. The smaller Pro…Pro-ette? comes in silver, gold, space grey, and rose gold, and starts at $599 for 32 gigs. A loaded up one with the Pencil will pretty well murder a grand. It is also available for preorders starting Thursday and out on the 31st.
As expected, Apple Watch gets a so-called ‘Spring lineup’ of bands, but the big news is the price cut from $349 to $299. It’s a good guess that an Apple Watch v. 2.0 will be out in the fall with this price reduction.
Over at Google, or if you insist…Alphabet…Chromecast has morphed into Googlecast. 9to5google.com says some Vizio TVs will come with Googlecast built in, and there are some new Googlecast enabled speakers. The app is also renamed Googlecast, and the updated version will be out on Android and iOS this week.
Looking Past Apple’s March Event; Google to Wire Cuba
Posted: March 21, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: 5.8 inch iPhone, Apple, Broadband, Cuba, Google, Headphone jack, Lightening connector, OLED, WiFi Leave a commentThere will be a bigger iPhone with a brighter screen in 2017 or 2018, according to applenws.com and Digitimes. Apple is reportedly going to go with OLED screens, which some competitors already use. They give users more vivid color and blacker blacks. The biggest phone will apparently grow from 5.7 to 5.8 inches, too. Apple giveth, and Apple taketh away…pictures have appeared online of Apple EarPods with a Lightening connector, instead of the standard everywhere else…including all iPhones up to now…1/8th inch phone jack. It appears that the rumor about iPhone 7 models losing the headphone jack are true. We’ll have a full recap of the Apple event today tomorrow morning.
The President is in Cuba, and announced today that Google has a deal to set up more WiFi and broadband across the island nation, immensely adding to the capacity of the state run system of public WiFi hotspots…which cost $4.50 an hour, and are out of reach to most Cubans anyway. Engadget.com reports that Cubans will still have to put up with government censorship of their internet.
iPhone 7 May Have Big Jump in Storage Capacity; PlayStation VR Out This Fall…at a Lower Price Than Oculus or Vive
Posted: March 16, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: 256 gig memory, Apple, HTC Vive, iPhone 7, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, SanDisk, Sony Leave a commentA new leak and photo shows a new, thinner and smaller 256 gig flash chip from Sandisk. Apple has used their flash memory in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and with a 256 gig model that is smaller and thinner than the 64 gig model, could offer a king-sized jump in memory capacity for iPhone 7. Businessinsider.com writes what a lot of us have been thinking…it’s time for Apple to kill the ridiculous 16 gig entry level model that won’t hold much more than the OS and a few apps, pictures, and songs. We’ll have to wait to see if this rumor pans out…along with ones about Apple dropping the headphone jack and including a powerful dual lens camera.
PlayStation VR headset will be arriving in October for $399, a dramatically lower price for gamers looking to take a whack at virtual reality. With the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive priced at $599 and $799, respectively, while also requiring powerful PCs, PSVR has a real shot at being the headset to beat in terms of popularity. Techcrunch.com says the $399 price tag notably doesn’t look like it includes the $45 PlayStation Camera, or the glowing orb Move controllers, though PSVR users will definitely be able to use the motion-tracked DualShock controller that’s included with the system. There will be 5 Sony made games when it rolls out.
GM Buys Self-Driving Car Kit Startup; Mini Fuel Cell for Drones; & Apple’s Event
Posted: March 11, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Apple, Cruise Automation, Drones, General Motors, GM, iPad, iPhones, Lyft, Miniature Fuel Cell, Pohang University, Self Driving Cars Leave a commentGeneral Motors has announced it is acquiring San Francisco based Cruise Automation, which is making sensors to turn regular vehicles into self-driving ones. Techcrunch.com reports that the price is undisclosed, but Fortune reports its over a billion dollars. GM had already partnered with Lyft. GM President Dan Ammann says the automotive giant plans to integrate the Cruise tech into its fleet of vehicle brands as soon as possible! Since GM sells about 10 million cars a year worldwide and 3 million of those in the US, that would put a substantial number of self driving cars on the roads in just a few years!
Pohang University of Science and Technology has built a miniature fuel cell they say can keep a drone in the air for an hour, rather than the usual 15-20 minutes batteries provide. Slashdot.org says the miniature fuel cells could also find their way into smartphones and other devices in the near future. The new type of fuel cell is claimed to have increased performance and higher long term durability.
Apple sent out invites to the tech media yesterday to an event at Cupertino Monday, March 21st. In their usual cryptic style, it merely says ‘Let Us Loop You In.’ It’s widely expected that Apple will show the new 4 inch iPhone SE, a revamped 9.7 inch iPad which may get the Pro designation, and new bands for the Apple Watch. Since it’s Apple, there could always be ‘one more thing!’ Stay tuned!
Future Apple Watch Might Call 911 Over Heart Attack; Nest Update Vastly Improves Auto Away
Posted: March 10, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Apple, Apple Watch, Auto Away, Away mode, Call 911, Family account, Heart attack, iPhone, Medical Emergency, Nest, Nest Cam Leave a commentApple has applied for a patent that uses the Apple Watch and iPhone to detect and report a medical emergency like a heart attack, and call 911. 9to5mac.com reports that the patent describes sensors detecting one or more so-called ‘care events,’ and…depending on the severity of the problem…email a family member, or in the event of a heart attack, call 911. It would use the accelerometer to detect sudden movement and heart monitor to detect loss or a reading. As a safety, it might ask for a response before calling. To allow for false alarms of a fall, it would use data to ignore the fall if you were at a bungee jumping facility. No information on when they might implement this.
Being rolled out right now…and update to Nest software. Theverge.com reports that Nest will be able to use the app update to detect when you leave the house, and set the thermostat to ‘away’ mode, then turn the heat back on when you’re getting close to home. It can allow for multiple family members with a family account setting that handles up to 10 smartphones with the app. They are also updating so data can be used from NestCams and the Nest Smoke Alarm to determine auto away.
Apple Leases Former Sunnyvale Pepsi Plant- Apple Car; Paying With Your Face…or Your Car Coming
Posted: March 2, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Apple, Apple Car, MasterCard, Mobile World Congress, Pay with car, Pay with selfie, Project Titan, Visa Leave a commentApple has leased a nearly 100,000 square foot building in Sunnyvale that used to be a Pepsi bottling plant. 9to5mac.com says the facility is more like a warehouse than office building, and sits on 5 acres…and is probably for Project Titan, the Apple Car. Apple already has an 80,000 square foot building and a 140,000 square foot facility in Sunnyvale thought to be for the project…both are a 10 minute walk from the old Pepsi plant.
Last year, MasterCard announced its pay with a ‘selfie’ option. Now, they’ve showed it off at Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. It uses the front camera of a smartphone and a single blink to identify a buyer. Cnet.com reports that rival Visa showed off a connected car that pays for your gas or for parking seamlessly. A chip in the car ‘talks’ to the gas pump or parking meter. It might be thrifty…pumping just enough gas to fill up, or paying for only the exact time you are parked.
Apple Event Moved Back a Week; Microsoft HoloLens Developer Kit Out March 30th-for 3 Grand!
Posted: February 29, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Apple, Build Conference, Developer, Hololens, iPhone SE, Microsoft Leave a commentApple’s spring event will be the week of March 21st, instead of earlier, as previously reported. It’s expected that they’ll show off the 4 inch iPhone SE, with the beefed up A9 processor, Live Photos, and Apple Pay. According to 9to5mac.com, the smaller phone won’t have 3D touch like the 6 and 6 Plus. It’s supposed to have 16 gig and 64 gig models, and sell for between $400 and $500. Apple will probably drop the price of the aging 5S down to $250 or less upon rollout of the new SE model.
Preorders have started for Microsoft’s developer edition today. It will start shipping March 30th, for a princely $3000! Microsoft didn’t say when the consumer version would be available. Theverge.com says the HoloLens will be bundled with 7 apps and games for developers. The 30th is also the date for Microsoft’s Build developer conference in San Francisco…tickets sold out in less than a minute!
