Anthropic Bets Big There Won’t Be an AI Bubble Bursting; Google-Schools Can Turn Off AI Tools-But it Impacts Search; EU Commission Reviewing Web Supermarket Fridge Attacks; Chinese Scientists Made Diamonds 5 Times Stronger

That isn’t slowing Anthropic, which is betting the farm…or at least investors’ farm…on the future of AI. It’s a hell of a big bet…$900 billion! Gizmodo.com reports that numbers have now been filled in on Anthropic’s S-1 filing in the run up to going public. The AI firm reported about $17 billion n third quarter revenue…a huge jump from the $1.4 billion in the same quarter last year. That sounds pretty good until you look at the $23.3 billion net loss during the quarter. That’s about double the loss the maker of Claude repaired in third quarter of 2025. Anthropic has a staggering $985 billion in financial commitments. Out of that, $214 billion is subject to termination rights or conditions that have to be met before they go into effect. Even so, the pace of cash burn seems unsustainable. The same is true with arch-rival OpenAI. If the AI bubble bursts, it may be due to the money side of things….the revenue needed to turn a profit may be just so huge that no company can reach it.
Google has just announced that it will disable AI tools for K-12 students next year unless the school administrators turn them on. According to techcrunch.com, the decision was made after Google meetings with schools, teachers, leading researchers, and policy makers. The down-side is that schools that restrict use of AI tools won’t be able to access Google Search, since AI features are deeply integrated into the search engine. With Google Googlebooks widely used in schools, as well as google’s suite of apps, this could be tough…unless plucky students decide to use the net access and try to get around Chrome and use Duck Duck Go! By the way, I just tried it, and at least on my Mac, I can access DuckDuckGo via Chrome.
You may have hard about the internet attacks on commercial refrigerators in Europe. More have been hit now. Monday, coolers in Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Estonia, and the Netherlands were hit…with temperatures shooting up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit…not only not cool, but almost cooking stuff rare! Last month, fridges in French markets were hit. Thenextweb.com notes that so far, no group has taken credit for the attacks, but now the European Commission will investigate and try to come up with a plan to protect the EU’s food supply. This is another one of those times I reiterate that I’m glad to have a ‘dumb’ refrigerator. That’s one appliance that might be better never connected to the internet!
Diamonds have always been the hardest thing known to man. Now, there are diamonds that are 5 times stronger. Scientists in China have found a way to do that by adding nanotubes to diamonds. Bgr.com reports that the diamond composite is indeed 5 times tougher without losing any of the famous diamond hardness. The scientists have also developed an artificial diamond that is harder than natural alternatives. It is made from graphite. Back to the original idea though. The gaps between grains of diamond are filled with nanotubes, then heated to 2000 degrees under 15 GPa of pressure. What are these good for…as most people manage not to break their diamond jewelry? The scientists say super hard tools and impact-resistant materials. Although there isn’t the level of drilling there used to be, Howard Hughes’ dad became wealthy by creating a diamond drill bit to drill for oil wells. An even harder, tougher diamond would be great for drilling into the earth…whether for oil, water, or exploration.
